Special Frontier Force

What is SFR?

Special Frontier Force (SFR) is a covert paramilitary special force of India, established in 1962 under the guidance of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). Created in the aftermath of the Sino-Indian War, the force was initially raised to conduct covert operations beyond Indian borders, particularly across Tibet and other sensitive regions in Asia. The unit, also internally referred to as Establishment 22, was formed largely from Tibetan refugees who were trained to undertake strategic missions that regular Indian Army units could not perform. Headquartered in Chakrata, Uttarakhand, SFR operates under the administrative control of the Cabinet Secretariat while remaining functionally aligned with the Prime Minister's Office. The force has participated in several key operations, including the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War where it played a significant role in guerrilla activities behind enemy lines. SFR personnel undergo rigorous training comparable to elite special forces globally, including parachute training, mountain warfare, and survival skills. The force remains one of the most secretive units in India's defence framework, frequently appearing in UPSC, NDA, and CDS examinations.
