What is ITBP?

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) is one of India's seven Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), established in 1962 after the Sino-Indian war. Its primary role is to guard the 3,488 km long India-China border along the Himalayan ranges, from the Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh. Headquartered in New Delhi, the force operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs. ITBP personnel are specially trained in high-altitude warfare, mountaineering, and survival in extreme climatic conditions. Beyond border security, ITBP is deployed for internal security duties, disaster response, and counter-insurgency operations. It also provides security to sensitive installations, VIPs, and during elections. The force is known for its expertise in mountain rescue and has established mountaineering expeditions and skiing as part of its training.
