What is BSF?

The Border Security Force (BSF) is one of India's premier central armed police forces (CAPFs) responsible for guarding the country's land borders during peacetime and preventing transnational crimes. Established on December 1, 1965, in the aftermath of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, the BSF was conceived to ensure the security of India's borders and to maintain the sanctity of the international boundary. Operating under the administrative control of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the BSF is primarily deployed along the India-Pakistan and India-Bangladesh borders. Over the years, its role has expanded to include counter-insurgency operations, internal security duties, election management, and disaster response. The force is also actively involved in anti-smuggling, anti-infiltration, and anti-terrorism tasks. With a strength of over 2.5 lakh personnel, the BSF is often called the 'First Wall of Defence' of India. Its specialized units include the Camel Contingent and the BSF Air Wing. The BSF also contributes to United Nations peacekeeping missions and is renowned for its camel-mounted patrols in the Thar Desert. Its personnel are trained at centres like the BSF Academy in Tekanpur. The force's vigil along the Line of Control and the International Border remains critical to national security. For students preparing for competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and defence entrance tests, understanding the BSF’s foundation, motto—'Duty Unto Death'—and its organizational structure is essential, as questions relating to internal security and border management frequently appear.
