National Security Guard

What is NSG?

The National Security Guard (NSG) is India’s premier counter-terrorism and counter-hijacking force, established in 1984 under the National Security Guard Act. Often called the ‘Black Cats’ due to their distinctive black uniforms, the NSG is a federal contingency force tasked with neutralizing specific terrorist threats in any part of the country. It is divided into two main components: the Special Action Group (SAG), drawn from the Indian Army, and the Special Ranger Group (SRG), composed of personnel from Central Armed Police Forces. The NSG operates directly under the Ministry of Home Affairs and is deployed only on the request of state governments or the central government, typically during high-risk situations such as hostage crises, hijackings, and terrorist strikes. Its headquarters is in Manesar, Haryana, with regional hubs in major cities to enable rapid response. The force gained nationwide recognition for its role during Operation Black Tornado in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, where NSG commandos neutralized terrorists and rescued hostages. For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and defence-related tests, understanding the NSG’s structure, command hierarchy, and operational jurisdiction is essential. The NSG symbolizes India’s resolve to combat terrorism with precision and minimal collateral damage, making it a critical component of the country's internal security architecture.
