Research and Analysis Wing
Full Form of RAW
What is RAW?
The Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) is India's primary foreign intelligence agency, operating directly under the Cabinet Secretariat. Established in 1968 under the guidance of R. N. Kao, RAW was created in response to intelligence failures during the 1962 Sino-Indian War and the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War. Its primary mandate is to monitor political, military, economic, and scientific developments in foreign countries that may affect India's national security. RAW is responsible for gathering external intelligence, conducting covert operations, and advising the government on strategic threats. The agency functions without direct parliamentary oversight, reporting only to the Prime Minister. RAW officers are recruited from various civil services and armed forces, and they operate worldwide under diplomatic cover or through unofficial channels. India's intelligence community relies heavily on RAW for counter-terrorism, counter-espionage, and securing critical information. The agency has played a pivotal role in major events, such as the creation of Bangladesh, the Kashmir conflict, and tracking global terrorist networks. For aspirants of civil services and defence exams, understanding RAW's structure and responsibilities is crucial, as questions often appear on India's security apparatus.
