Transient Ischemic Attack
Full Form of TIA
What is TIA?
A Transient Ischemic Attack, commonly known as TIA or a mini-stroke, is a brief episode of neurological dysfunction caused by a temporary disruption of blood flow to a part of the brain. Unlike a full-blown stroke, the symptoms of a TIA usually resolve within minutes to a few hours, typically within 24 hours, without leaving permanent brain damage. However, medical experts treat every TIA as a serious warning sign that a major stroke may follow if preventive steps are not taken immediately. In India, TIAs are increasingly reported due to rising rates of hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, and sedentary lifestyles, especially among working professionals in urban areas. Recognising symptoms such as sudden one-sided weakness, slurred speech, dizziness, facial drooping, and temporary vision loss can be life-saving. TIA is a frequently tested concept in Indian medical entrance examinations including NEET PG, AIIMS, and other competitive exams, making it highly relevant for medical students and healthcare professionals across the country.
