Cardiovascular Disease
Full Form of CVD
What is CVD?
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a broad term encompassing a range of disorders affecting the heart and blood vessels, including coronary artery disease, stroke, hypertension, and heart failure. In India, CVD has emerged as the leading cause of mortality, accounting for nearly 28% of all deaths according to recent studies. The high burden is attributed to rapid urbanization, sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy diets rich in trans fats and salt, increased tobacco use, and rising prevalence of diabetes and hypertension. CVD is used extensively in medical literature, public health reports, hospital records, and government health schemes like the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD). It is also a critical topic in competitive exams such as UPSC, NEET PG, and nursing exams, where questions often focus on risk factors, prevention strategies, and epidemiological trends. Early detection through regular checkups, lifestyle modifications like exercise and balanced diet, and management of diabetes and hypertension are key to reducing the CVD burden. Public awareness campaigns in India increasingly emphasize cardiovascular health to curb this epidemic.
