What is ECG?

An Electrocardiogram, abbreviated as ECG or EKG, is a non-invasive medical test that records the electrical activity of the heart over a period of time using electrodes placed on the skin. In India, the ECG test is widely available in hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic centres across both urban and rural areas, making it a primary tool for cardiac evaluation. It is commonly prescribed when a patient presents symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath, or dizziness. The test captures the heart's rhythm and electrical impulses, displaying them as wave patterns on graph paper or a monitor, which help physicians diagnose arrhythmias, heart attacks, enlarged heart chambers, and electrolyte imbalances. In the Indian healthcare system, ECG is also a routine preoperative checkup and a mandatory screening in many government health schemes, including those under Ayushman Bharat. During preventive health camps and corporate checkups, ECG serves as an initial screening for underlying cardiac issues. For students preparing for medical entrance exams like NEET and AIIMS, understanding the principles of ECG, including the P wave, QRS complex, and T wave, is essential, as questions on cardiac physiology frequently appear in the biology section.
