Electroencephalogram
Full Form of EEG
What is EEG?
Electroencephalogram, commonly known as EEG, is a non-invasive diagnostic test that records the electrical activity of the brain. Small metal discs called electrodes are attached to the scalp to detect and amplify brain wave patterns. In India, EEG is widely used in hospitals, neurology clinics, and diagnostic centers to evaluate neurological conditions. The test plays a crucial role in diagnosing epilepsy, determining its type, and localizing seizure foci. It is also employed to assess sleep disorders, brain tumors, encephalopathy, coma, and brain death. During a routine EEG, the patient sits or lies comfortably while the procedure lasts about 30 to 60 minutes. Specialized forms like sleep-deprived EEG or ambulatory EEG are used for extended monitoring. For Indian medical and paramedical students, understanding EEG interpretation is essential for entrance exams such as NEET PG, AIIMS nursing, and other allied healthcare tests. The test is safe, painless, and does not involve any electric shock. It has become an integral tool in neuroscience research and pre-surgical evaluation of epilepsy patients across the country.
