What is MRI?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive medical imaging technique that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to generate detailed images of the internal structures of the body. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI does not involve ionizing radiation, making it safer for repeated use. In India, MRI has become an indispensable diagnostic tool, available in most major hospitals and diagnostic centers, from metropolitan cities to smaller towns, though affordability remains a challenge in rural areas. The technology is extensively used in neurology to detect brain tumors, strokes, and multiple sclerosis; in orthopedics for joint and spinal injuries; and in oncology for cancer staging. The Indian healthcare sector has witnessed a surge in the installation of MRI machines, driven by rising disease prevalence and medical tourism.
