Cerebrovascular Accident
Full Form of CVA
What is CVA?
A cerebrovascular accident (CVA), commonly known as a stroke, occurs when blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. It is a medical emergency that requires immediate intervention. In India, CVA is a leading cause of disability and mortality, with rising incidence due to lifestyle factors such as hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and sedentary habits. The term is widely used in hospitals, clinics, and medical literature across the country, from emergency rooms to neurology departments. Public health initiatives like the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS) aim to reduce stroke burden. CVA is clinically classified as ischemic (due to clot) or hemorrhagic (due to bleeding). Understanding CVA is critical for medical students and professionals, as it features prominently in NEET PG and other Indian medical entrance exams.
