What is SPG?

The Special Protection Group (SPG) is an elite security force of the Government of India, established in 1988 under the SPG Act. Created in the aftermath of the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984, the SPG is tasked with the close protection of the Prime Minister of India and their immediate family members. Headquartered in New Delhi, the force operates under the Cabinet Secretariat and draws personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces, particularly the CRPF and BSF, as well as the Indian Army. The SPG is considered one of the most sophisticated protection units in the world, employing highly trained commandos skilled in close-quarter combat, advanced driving, counter-sniper operations, and emergency medical response. Its mandate covers threat assessment, route security, and the creation of a secure perimeter around the Prime Minister at all times. The SPG has consistently evolved its tactics to address modern security challenges, including chemical, biological, and cyber threats. For aspirants preparing for UPSC, SSC, or defence examinations, knowledge of the SPG is essential as questions frequently appear in the polity and general awareness sections.
