Rapid Action Force
Full Form of RAP
What is RAP?
The Rapid Action Force (RAP) is a specialised paramilitary unit of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in India, established in 1992 to handle communal riots, civil unrest, and other law-and-order emergencies. Comprising 10 battalions, it is trained in crowd control, anti-rioting tactics, and rapid deployment to crisis zones across the country. The force is equipped with non-lethal weapons, water cannons, and protective gear to minimise casualties during confrontations. RAP personnel are drawn from CRPF and undergo rigorous training in conflict resolution and human rights. They are often deployed during festivals, elections, and communal tensions to prevent violence and maintain peace. In exams like UPSC CAPF, SSC, and state police recruitment, questions frequently appear on RAP's formation, role, and significance. The unit played a key role during the 2002 Gujarat riots and subsequent communal clashes, earning a reputation for swift and impartial action. Its motto 'Service and Loyalty' reflects its commitment to public safety. RAP operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs and works closely with local police and other central forces to restore order in volatile situations.
