Rapid Action Force
Full Form of RAFT
What is RAFT?
The Rapid Action Force (RAFT) is a specialized paramilitary unit of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in India, created to handle communal violence, riot control, and internal security crises. It was raised in 1992 after the Babri Masjid demolition to provide a quick-response mechanism for restoring public order. RAFT personnel undergo intensive training in crowd management, counter-insurgency, and humanitarian relief, often being the first responders in volatile situations. The force is deployed across sensitive areas in India, particularly during religious festivals, election periods, and after natural disasters. RAFT battalions are stationed strategically in states with a history of communal tensions, such as Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir. Its rapid deployment capability and specialized equipment, including water cannons and protective gear, make it distinct from regular CRPF units. For competitive exams like UPSC CAPF, RAFT is a frequently mentioned topic under internal security. Understanding RAFT's role helps aspirants grasp India's multi-layered approach to maintaining civil harmony and responding to public order emergencies.
