Officer Junior Grade
Full Form of OJG
What is OJG?
Officer Junior Grade (OJG) is a commissioned officer rank used primarily in the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard. It is equivalent to the rank of Sub Lieutenant in the Navy and Assistant Commandant in the Coast Guard. Officers holding this rank are typically fresh graduates from the Indian Naval Academy (INA) at Ezhimala or the Indian Coast Guard Academy who have completed their initial training. The OJG rank is the first step in the officer hierarchy, and personnel in this grade are entrusted with watch-keeping duties, navigation responsibilities, and command of small units or sections. In India, the term is commonly used in official communications, service documents, and during ceremonial postings. For defence aspirants, understanding the OJG rank is important for exams like NDA, CDS, and INET, where questions on service ranks and their equivalents frequently appear. The rank reflects the structured career progression within India's maritime defence forces, where officers are groomed for higher responsibilities such as Lieutenant Commander or Commandant. The OJG designation ensures clear hierarchical alignment in joint operations with other branches of the Indian Armed Forces.
