Indian Coast Guard
Full Form of ICG
What is ICG?
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is a maritime law enforcement and search and rescue agency responsible for safeguarding India's vast coastline, territorial waters, and exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Established in 1978 under the Ministry of Defence, the ICG operates under the overarching command of the Ministry of Defence but functions as an independent armed force. Its primary roles include maritime security, coastal surveillance, anti-smuggling and anti-piracy operations, environmental protection (especially oil spill response), and ensuring the safety of life at sea during natural disasters or accidents. The ICG works closely with the Indian Navy, customs authorities, and state marine police to maintain sovereignty over India's maritime domain. It is also a key player in international maritime cooperation, often participating in joint exercises and humanitarian missions. The ICG's fleet includes patrol vessels, aircraft, and hovercraft stationed at various bases along the Indian coastline. For competitive exams like UPSC, CAPF, and defence recruitment, questions regarding the ICG's establishment year, motto ('Vayam Rakshamah'), and apex leadership (Director General) are common. Civilians may encounter the ICG during coastal safety campaigns or when seeking assistance via its toll-free helpline 1554.
