Indian Navy
Full Form of IN
What is IN?
The Indian Navy (IN) is the naval branch of the Indian Armed Forces, responsible for safeguarding the nation's maritime borders, securing sea lines of communication, and projecting naval power across the Indian Ocean region. Headquartered in New Delhi, it operates under the Ministry of Defence and comprises surface ships, submarines, aircraft, and special forces like the Marine Commandos (MARCOS). The Navy plays a crucial role in India's maritime security, counter-piracy operations, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief, such as during the 2004 tsunami. It also conducts joint exercises with friendly foreign navies to enhance interoperability. The Indian Navy uses the prefix 'INS' (Indian Naval Ship) for its vessels. Its motto is 'Sam no Varunah' (May the Lord of the Waters be auspicious unto us). Aspirants preparing for defence exams like NDA or CDS often study the Indian Navy's structure, fleet, and recent acquisitions. The Navy is also a key player in the government's 'SAGAR' (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision, ensuring a stable and peaceful maritime neighbourhood.
