Indian Air Force
Full Form of IAF
What is IAF?
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is the air arm of the Indian Armed Forces, responsible for safeguarding India's airspace and conducting aerial warfare. Established on 8 October 1932 as an auxiliary force of the British Empire, it dropped the 'Royal' prefix in 1950 after India became a republic. Today, the IAF is the fourth largest air force in the world. Its primary roles include defending the nation's skies, providing close air support to ground troops, strategic bombing, reconnaissance, and humanitarian assistance during disasters. The IAF has participated in all major conflicts involving India, such as the Indo-Pakistani wars of 1947, 1965, 1971, the Kargil conflict, and the 2019 Balakot airstrike. It also plays a vital peacetime role in search and rescue, airlifting supplies, and assisting civil authorities. Headquartered in New Delhi, the IAF operates under the Ministry of Defence with the motto 'Touch the Sky with Glory' from the Bhagavad Gita. Its fleet includes advanced fighters like Rafale and Su-30MKI, indigenous Tejas, and heavy-lift helicopters. For students, knowledge about the IAF is essential for defence examinations such as NDA, CDS, AFCAT, and general studies papers in UPSC and state public service commissions.
