What is HAL?
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is a premier Indian state-owned aerospace and defence company headquartered in Bangalore. Established in 1940 by Walchand Hirachand and later nationalised, HAL today operates under the Ministry of Defence and is one of the largest public sector undertakings in India. It designs, manufactures, and assembles a wide range of aircraft, helicopters, engines, avionics, and related systems for both military and civil applications. HAL’s indigenous products include the Tejas light combat aircraft, Dhruv advanced light helicopter, HTT-40 basic trainer, and the HJT-36 Sitara intermediate jet trainer. It also manufactures under licence aircraft like the Sukhoi Su-30MKI and Hawk advanced jet trainers. HAL plays a pivotal role in India’s self-reliance in defence production, contributing significantly to the Make in India initiative. The company has numerous production and research divisions across the country and collaborates with DRDO, ISRO, and international aerospace firms.
