What is ISRO?
The Indian Space Research Organisation is India’s national space agency, headquartered in Bengaluru. It operates under the Department of Space, directly overseen by the Prime Minister of India. ISRO is responsible for the planning and execution of space exploration, satellite launches, and development of related technologies. Founded in 1969 by Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, it has grown into one of the world's leading space agencies, known for its highly cost-effective missions. ISRO’s achievements include launching the Chandrayaan lunar missions, the Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan), and a record-breaking launch of 104 satellites in a single rocket. The agency develops indigenous launch vehicles such as PSLV and GSLV, and operates the largest constellation of remote-sensing satellites. Its applications span communication, weather forecasting, navigation (NavIC), and disaster management. The organisation appears frequently in Indian competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and state PSCs, making its mandate, milestones, and organisational structure important for aspirants.
