Combined Defence Services
Full Form of CDS
What is CDS?
The Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination is a prestigious national-level competitive exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in India. It serves as the primary gateway for graduates aspiring to join the Indian Armed Forces as commissioned officers. The exam is held twice a year, typically in April and September, to select candidates for training at the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (AFA), and Officers Training Academy (OTA). Successful candidates are inducted into the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, undertaking rigorous training to serve in leadership roles. The CDS exam structure includes a written test covering English, General Knowledge, and Elementary Mathematics (for IMA, INA, AFA; OTA has only English and GK). After the written exam, candidates face the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview, a comprehensive assessment of personality and leadership. The CDS exam is highly relevant for defence aspirants and frequently features in competitive exam syllabi, including civil services and defence-related tests. Mastering the CDS syllabus is crucial for those aiming to crack the exam and embark on a career of national service. It remains a symbol of honour and a pathway to serving the nation.
