What is UPSC?

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is India’s premier central recruiting agency, constitutionally mandated under Articles 315 to 323 to conduct examinations for appointment to the services of the Union. Established originally in 1926, it was renamed after independence. Headquartered in Dholpur House, New Delhi, UPSC annually conducts the Civil Services Examination (CSE) to fill positions in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and numerous central Group A and Group B services. Beyond CSE, it administers the Engineering Services Examination, Combined Medical Services Examination, National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination, Combined Defence Services Examination, and many more. The Commission also functions as an advisory body on disciplinary matters, making it a cornerstone of India’s administrative machinery. Known for its rigorous selection process involving prelims, mains, and personality test, the UPSC exam is widely regarded as one of the toughest competitive examinations in India. It not only ensures merit-based recruitment but also shapes the country's administrative leadership. For students, the UPSC exam pattern and syllabus are crucial for career planning and appear frequently in general awareness sections of banking, SSC, and other competitive exams.
