What is IRS?

The Indian Revenue Service (IRS) is a premier civil service under the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), functioning under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, Government of India. It is one of the three All India Services along with IAS and IPS. Officers of the IRS are recruited through the Civil Services Examination conducted by UPSC and are responsible for the administration of direct taxes (income tax, corporate tax) and indirect taxes (GST, customs, excise). They play a critical role in formulating tax policies, combating tax evasion, detecting financial fraud, and ensuring compliance with tax laws. IRS officers serve in various capacities as Income Tax Commissioners, Principal Commissioners, Chief Commissioners, and even as members of the CBDT and CBIC. The service is vital for revenue generation, which funds national development programs. In exams like UPSC and SSC CGL, questions related to IRS and its functions are common.
