National Medical Commission
Full Form of NMC
What is NMC?
The National Medical Commission (NMC) is the apex statutory body in India responsible for regulating medical education and medical practice across the country. Established under the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, it replaced the Medical Council of India (MCI) with the aim of bringing transparency, accountability, and quality reforms in the medical sector. The NMC sets standards for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, accredits medical colleges, conducts licensing examinations such as the National Exit Test (NExT), and oversees the ethical conduct of doctors. It operates through multiple autonomous boards, including the Under-Graduate Medical Education Board, the Post-Graduate Medical Education Board, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board, and the Ethics and Medical Registration Board. The Commission plays a pivotal role in ensuring that medical graduates possess the necessary skills and knowledge to serve the healthcare needs of India’s diverse population. For students aspiring to become doctors, the NMC’s policies directly affect the MBBS curriculum, NEET exam patterns, and internship requirements. Understanding the NMC is essential for medical aspirants preparing for competitive exams like NEET PG and FMGE. The Commission’s reforms aim to increase the number of quality doctors and improve healthcare accessibility in rural and underserved areas.
