National Board of Examinations
Full Form of NBE
What is NBE?
The National Board of Examinations (NBE) is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, responsible for conducting high-stakes postgraduate and fellowship medical examinations. Established in 1975, it sets standards for medical education and awards the Diplomate of National Board (DNB) qualification, which is equivalent to MD/MS degrees offered by universities. The NBE also administers the NEET PG, NEET MDS, and FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) for Indian and international medical graduates seeking practice in India. Its role is crucial in ensuring fair and transparent admissions to postgraduate medical courses across the country. The NBE operates through a network of accredited hospitals and institutions, conducting computer-based tests twice a year. For students, the NBE’s exams are a gateway to specialisation and super-specialisation in medicine, with NEET PG being a mandatory stepping stone for all medical graduates aspiring to pursue PG seats. Understanding the NBE’s functions, including its centralised counselling via MCC, is vital for any medical aspirant in India. The board also plays a key role in equivalency decisions for foreign degrees, making it a cornerstone of India's medical regulatory landscape.
