Medical Council of India
Full Form of MCI
What is MCI?
The Medical Council of India (MCI) was the statutory body that regulated medical education and the practice of medicine across India. Established under the Indian Medical Council Act of 1956, it oversaw the recognition of medical qualifications, accreditation of medical colleges, and the maintenance of a national register of medical practitioners. The MCI played a pivotal role in setting curriculum standards for undergraduate (MBBS) and postgraduate medical courses, as well as conducting the screening test (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) for Indian citizens who obtained medical degrees abroad. In 2020, the MCI was superseded by the National Medical Commission (NMC) following healthcare reforms. However, its legacy remains significant for students appearing for NEET PG and NEET UG, as many eligibility criteria and college recognitions still reference the MCI. The council also handled ethics and disciplinary matters for doctors. Understanding the MCI is essential for medical aspirants and practitioners in India.
