What is MBBS?
MBBS stands for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. It is an undergraduate medical degree awarded to students who successfully complete a programme in medicine and surgery. In India, MBBS is the foundational degree to become a practising allopathic doctor. The course is regulated by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and spans five and a half years including a compulsory one-year internship. Admission to MBBS is through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), a highly competitive examination. The curriculum covers preclinical, paraclinical, and clinical subjects such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology, forensic medicine, general medicine, surgery, paediatrics, and obstetrics and gynaecology. Graduates are conferred the title ‘Doctor’ and can pursue postgraduate specialisation through NEET-PG. The degree is recognised by the Indian Medical Council Act and enables practice across the country. MBBS is considered one of the most prestigious and challenging programmes in India, attracting lakhs of aspirants each year. It is essential for anyone aiming to join the medical profession and serve in hospitals, clinics, or public health sectors. For government job aspirants, the MBBS qualification is often a prerequisite for medical officer posts in healthcare departments.
