Millennium Development Goals

What is MDG?

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were a set of eight international development targets established following the United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000. They aimed to address global challenges such as extreme poverty, hunger, gender inequality, lack of education, child and maternal mortality, disease, environmental degradation, and the need for global partnership. In India, the MDGs guided policy formulation and resource allocation from 2000 to 2015, particularly in areas like primary education, maternal health, and access to safe drinking water. The government used MDG indicators in reports such as the Economic Survey and Planning Commission documents to track progress. Although India achieved some targets, like halving poverty and improving school enrollment, it fell short on others, including reducing child undernutrition and maternal mortality. The MDGs were succeeded by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2016. For competitive exams like UPSC Civil Services, knowledge of MDGs is essential as questions often appear in General Studies papers on international organizations, India’s development policies, and comparative performance with other nations.
