United Nations Development Programme
Full Form of UNDP
What is UNDP?
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the global development network of the United Nations, working to eradicate poverty, reduce inequalities, and promote sustainable development. Founded in 1965, it operates in nearly 170 countries, including India, where it has been active since 1951. In the Indian context, UNDP collaborates with central and state governments, civil society, and private sector partners to address critical challenges such as climate change, gender inequality, poverty alleviation, digital inclusion, and livelihood generation. Its work aligns closely with India’s national priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UNDP’s projects range from building resilient communities in disaster-prone areas to strengthening governance and public service delivery. The programme is frequently referenced in UPSC, civil services, and other competitive exams, especially in questions related to international organizations, India’s development cooperation, and the SDGs. UNDP also publishes the annual Human Development Index (HDI) and Human Development Report, which are key resources for policymakers and students alike.
