United Nations Environment Programme
Full Form of UNEP
What is UNEP?
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is a global environmental authority established in 1972 to coordinate the United Nations' environmental activities and assist developing countries in implementing environmentally sound policies. UNEP sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the UN system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. In India, UNEP collaborates with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on projects related to climate change adaptation, biodiversity conservation, pollution control, and sustainable energy. It also supports Indian states in preparing climate action plans and promotes green finance. UNEP is widely referenced in environmental science curricula, competitive exams like UPSC, and policy documents. Its flagship reports, such as the Emissions Gap Report and Global Environment Outlook, are used by researchers and policymakers worldwide.
