Full Form of UNICEF
What is UNICEF?
UNICEF, originally the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, is a global agency of the United Nations dedicated to protecting the rights and well-being of every child. Founded in 1946 to provide emergency food and healthcare to children in countries devastated by World War II, it became a permanent part of the UN in 1953 and dropped 'International' and 'Emergency' from its name, though the acronym persisted. Today, UNICEF operates in over 190 countries and territories, focusing on child survival, development, education, nutrition, water and sanitation, and protection from violence and exploitation. In India, UNICEF has been active since 1949, working closely with the central and state governments, civil society, and the private sector. Its programmes address critical issues like immunisation, maternal health, child marriage, quality education, and digital learning. The organisation plays a pivotal role in shaping policies such as the National Education Policy and the Child Protection Framework. UNICEF India's campaigns, like 'Baal Adhikar' and 'Swachh Bharat' support, have grassroots reach. In Indian competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and banking, UNICEF frequently appears under current affairs, international organisations, or social development topics, making its mandate and initiatives important for aspirants.
