Light Combat Helicopter
Full Form of LCH
What is LCH?
The Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) is an indigenously developed multi-role attack helicopter designed and manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Armed Forces. It is specifically optimized for high-altitude warfare, capable of operating in extreme terrains like the Siachen Glacier and Ladakh, making it unique among its peers. The LCH is armed with a 20 mm nose gun, 70 mm rockets, and air-to-air missiles, and is designed for combat search and rescue, anti-tank operations, and close air support. It entered service in 2022 after extensive trials, with both the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Indian Army placing orders. The helicopter can operate at altitudes up to 5,000 meters, a critical requirement for India's northern borders. Its low radar signature, crashworthy landing gear, and glass cockpit enhance survivability. The LCH is often compared to the HAL Rudra and Dhruv ALH, but it is a dedicated combat platform. For defence exam aspirants, understanding the LCH’s role in India’s air combat capabilities, its indigenous content, and its strategic importance in high-altitude warfare is essential for questions on military modernization and the government's 'Make in India' initiative.
