Advanced Light Helicopter
Full Form of ALH
What is ALH?
The Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) is a multi-role, twin-engine helicopter designed and developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in collaboration with German aerospace company MBB (now part of Airbus Helicopters). Primarily known by its Indian name 'Dhruv', the ALH serves as a versatile platform for the Indian Armed Forces, including the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard. It is used for troop transport, reconnaissance, search and rescue, medical evacuation, and armed combat roles. The ALH is notable for being one of the first indigenous helicopter programs in India and has been in service since the early 2000s. It is also exported to several countries. The helicopter features advanced avionics, a glass cockpit, and the Shakti engine (a joint development with Turbomeca). In terms of exam relevance, the ALH frequently appears in UPSC, defence exams, and general knowledge sections, highlighting India's indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities. The ALH has undergone several upgrades, including the weaponized variant (ALH-WSI) and the naval variant (ALH-N) capable of deck landing and anti-submarine warfare.
