Light Utility Helicopter
Full Form of LUH
What is LUH?
The Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) is a 3-ton class indigenous helicopter developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Armed Forces. Designed to replace the aging Cheetah and Chetak fleets, the LUH is optimized for high-altitude operations, utility roles such as troop transport, reconnaissance, and medical evacuation. It has a maximum altitude capability of over 6.5 km, powered by a single Shakti engine. The LUH successfully completed hot and high-altitude trials in Leh and Siachen, demonstrating its capability in extreme conditions. The Indian Army and Air Force have placed orders for induction, with the first deliveries expected by 2025. This helicopter is a key component of India's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative in defence manufacturing. It is also relevant for competitive exams like UPSC, CDS, and AFCAT, where questions on indigenous defence platforms frequently appear. The LUH underscores India's progress in self-reliant aerospace technology.
