Intermediate Jet Trainer
Full Form of IJT
What is IJT?
The Intermediate Jet Trainer (IJT) is a tandem-seat, subsonic jet trainer aircraft developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Air Force (IAF). Designed to bridge the gap between basic propeller trainers (like the HPT-32) and advanced jet trainers (like the Hawk), the IJT serves as the second stage of pilot training in the IAF's operational conversion pipeline. It introduces cadets to jet handling characteristics, aerobatics, instrument flying, and basic weapon delivery before they transition to frontline fighters. The program began in the late 1990s with the maiden flight of the prototype in 2002, but faced delays due to redesign and engine issues. Despite limited production, the IJT remains critical for indigenous training capability, reducing dependence on foreign platforms. It is primarily used at IAF training establishments such as Air Force Academy Dundigal and Hakimpet. For defence exam aspirants (NDA, CDS, AFCAT), knowledge of the IJT's role in the IAF's training ladder is important, especially in questions on indigenous aircraft and modernisation.
