Advanced Jet Trainer
Full Form of AJT
What is AJT?
The Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT) is a high-performance aircraft used by air forces worldwide to train pilots in advanced flying skills before they transition to frontline combat jets. In India, the AJT role is fulfilled primarily by the BAE Hawk Mk 132, inducted by the Indian Air Force (IAF) in 2008 under a deal with BAE Systems and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. The Hawk AJT bridges the gap between basic propeller-driven trainers (like the Pilatus PC-7) and supersonic fighters such as the Su-30MKI or Tejas. These aircraft are equipped with modern avionics, ejection seats, and weapons training capabilities, allowing pilots to practice air combat, ground attack, and formation flying safely. The IAF’s AJT fleet is based at Bidar Air Force Station in Karnataka and at the Air Force Academy in Dundigal, Telangana. The procurement of the AJT was a significant step to reduce the number of accidents in the MiG-21 fleet, as pilots now receive more thorough jet training before handling high-performance aircraft. For defense aspirants preparing for exams like NDA, AFCAT, or CDS, understanding the AJT and its role in the IAF’s pilot training pipeline is important for questions on military modernization and aviation.
