Light Combat Aircraft
Full Form of LCA
What is LCA?
The Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) is a single-engine, delta-wing, multi-role fighter aircraft developed by India's Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). Known as the HAL Tejas, it represents a cornerstone of India's indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities under the 'Make in India' initiative. The LCA was designed to replace the ageing MiG-21 fleet of the Indian Air Force (IAF) and to serve as a lightweight, agile platform for air superiority, ground attack, and reconnaissance missions. Its first flight took place in 2001, and after extensive testing, it received initial operational clearance in 2016 and final operational clearance in 2019. The LCA is used by the IAF and is being developed for the Indian Navy as a carrier-borne variant. It incorporates advanced technologies such as fly-by-wire controls, composite materials, and a modern avionics suite. In competitive exams like UPSC, NDA, and CDS, questions about the LCA often appear under defence and current affairs sections, highlighting its role in India's strategic autonomy. The ongoing Mk1A and Mk2 upgrades aim to enhance its combat capabilities with improved radar, weapon systems, and engine performance.
