Viral Gastroenteritis

What is VGE?

Viral Gastroenteritis (VGE) is an intestinal infection caused by various viruses that lead to inflammation of the stomach and small intestine. Commonly referred to as stomach flu or gastric flu, it is not related to the influenza virus despite its nickname. The primary causative agents include norovirus, rotavirus, and adenovirus, with rotavirus being the leading cause among young children. In India, VGE is a major public health concern, especially during the monsoon and winter seasons when outbreaks are reported frequently in schools, hostels, slums, and densely populated neighbourhoods. The infection spreads through contaminated food and water, poor hand hygiene, and close contact with infected individuals. Symptoms include watery diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, nausea, mild fever, and dehydration. Preventive measures include drinking boiled or filtered water, washing hands regularly, eating freshly cooked food, and vaccinating children against rotavirus. For competitive medical, nursing, and paramedical examinations in India, VGE is an important topic under communicable diseases, public health, community medicine, and microbiology sections.
