Acute Respiratory Infection
Full Form of ARI
What is ARI?
Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) is a broad term used to describe infections of the upper or lower respiratory tract that develop rapidly, typically within a few days. Common examples include the common cold, sinusitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia. In India, ARI is a major public health concern, especially among children under five, where it remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. The condition is frequently encountered in primary health centres, district hospitals, and community health programmes across the country. ARI is often triggered by viruses or bacteria and is exacerbated by factors like air pollution, overcrowding, and malnutrition. The Integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood Illness (IMNCI) strategy, promoted by the Indian government and WHO, emphasises early recognition and treatment of ARI to reduce deaths. For medical students and healthcare professionals, understanding ARI is critical for NEET PG, nursing exams, and MBBS curriculum, as questions on its classification, signs of severity, and management protocols frequently appear.
