Oral Rehydration Therapy
Full Form of ORT
What is ORT?
Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT) is a simple, cost-effective treatment for dehydration caused by diarrhoea, vomiting, or other fluid losses. It involves drinking a solution of clean water, sugar, and salt—often referred to as Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS)—to replenish lost fluids and electrolytes. In India, ORT has been a cornerstone of public health programmes since the 1970s, especially in rural and underprivileged areas where access to intravenous fluids is limited. The therapy is widely promoted by the Ministry of Health, WHO, and UNICEF through campaigns like the National Diarrhoea Control Programme and Integrated Child Development Services. It is primarily used in primary health centres, anganwadis, and community health drives to manage acute diarrhoeal diseases, which remain a leading cause of child mortality in India. ORT is administered orally, making it suitable for home-based care with proper guidance. For medical and nursing students, ORT is a key topic in paediatrics, community medicine, and public health exams such as NEET PG and AIIMS. The therapy's simplicity and effectiveness have saved millions of lives, significantly reducing infant mortality rates in India. Understanding ORT is essential for healthcare professionals working in resource-limited settings.
