Urinary Tract Infection
Full Form of UTI
What is UTI?
A urinary tract infection is a common bacterial infection that affects any part of the urinary system, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. It occurs when bacteria, most commonly Escherichia coli, enter the urinary tract through the urethra and multiply in the bladder. Women are significantly more prone to UTIs than men due to their shorter urethra, and the condition is one of the most frequent reasons for doctor visits across India, especially among young women, pregnant mothers, and elderly patients. Symptoms typically include a burning sensation during urination, frequent urge to urinate, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, and pelvic pain. In India, UTIs are commonly treated with antibiotics, increased fluid intake, and improved hygiene practices, with rural healthcare centres often reporting high cases due to limited sanitation facilities. The condition is regularly featured in medical entrance exams such as NEET, AIIMS, and nursing competitive tests, where students are tested on causative organisms, diagnostic methods, and treatment protocols.
