Right to Information
Full Form of RTI
What is RTI?
The Right to Information (RTI) is a fundamental legal right empowering Indian citizens to access information held by public authorities, fostering transparency and accountability in governance. Enshrined in the RTI Act of 2005, it replaced the earlier Freedom of Information Act and marked a paradigm shift from a culture of secrecy to openness. Under this Act, any citizen can request government documents, records, emails, or notes by filing a simple application with a nominal fee, and the concerned department must respond within 30 days. The RTI has exposed corruption, delayed projects, and misuse of funds, making it a powerful tool for social audit. In India, it is widely used by activists, journalists, and ordinary people to question administrative decisions and demand accountability. The Act also mandates the appointment of Central and State Information Commissioners to hear appeals and ensure compliance. For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and state PCS, RTI is a pivotal topic under governance, polity, and law, with questions often focusing on its significance, exemptions under Section 8, and landmark cases.
