What is VFD?
A Variable Frequency Drive, commonly abbreviated as VFD, is an electronic motor controller that adjusts the speed and torque of an alternating current induction motor by varying the frequency and voltage of the power supplied to it. In India, VFDs play a vital role across industries such as manufacturing, textiles, cement, oil and gas, water treatment, and HVAC systems installed in commercial buildings, hospitals, and metro stations. They are extensively deployed in industrial automation setups in cities like Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Ahmedabad, and Coimbatore, where factories rely on them to save energy, reduce mechanical wear, and improve process control. Indian engineering students studying electrical, electronics, or instrumentation streams frequently encounter VFDs in their laboratory work and final year projects, making the concept highly relevant for campus placements and competitive exams like GATE, SSC JE, and RRB JE. The technology also supports India's energy efficiency mission by reducing power consumption in motors, which account for a significant share of industrial electricity use in the country.
