Ventricular Septal Defect
Full Form of VSD
What is VSD?
Ventricular Septal Defect, commonly abbreviated as VSD, is a congenital heart condition characterised by an abnormal opening in the wall (septum) that separates the two lower chambers of the heart, known as the ventricles. This hole allows oxygen-rich blood to mix with oxygen-poor blood, forcing the heart and lungs to work harder than normal. VSD is one of the most common congenital heart defects observed in newborns across India and worldwide, and it can occur on its own or alongside other cardiac abnormalities. In the Indian healthcare context, VSD is frequently diagnosed through echocardiography and is managed by paediatric cardiologists in tertiary hospitals and specialised cardiac centres in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Bengaluru. The condition may close on its own in mild cases, while larger defects often require surgical repair or catheter-based intervention. For students preparing for medical entrance exams such as NEET PG, AIIMS, or USMLE, VSD is an important topic under paediatric cardiology and is regularly featured in clinical case discussions and viva questions.
