Coronary Heart Disease
Full Form of CHD
What is CHD?
Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is a condition where the coronary arteries, which supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle, become narrowed or blocked due to the buildup of cholesterol-rich plaque (atherosclerosis). This reduces blood flow, leading to chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, or a heart attack. In India, CHD is a major public health concern, accounting for a significant proportion of non-communicable disease deaths. It is increasingly prevalent due to lifestyle factors such as unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, smoking, and stress, with a rising incidence among younger urban populations. The term CHD is widely used in clinical settings, medical textbooks, and public health campaigns. It is also a common topic in competitive exams like NEET PG, AIIMS, and UPSC, where questions often cover risk factors, diagnostic methods (ECG, angiography), and management strategies including lifestyle changes, medications (statins, antiplatelets), and surgical interventions (angioplasty, bypass). Understanding CHD is crucial for future healthcare professionals, as early detection and prevention can significantly reduce mortality.
