What is PLC?
A Programmable Logic Controller, commonly known as PLC, is a ruggedised industrial computer used to automate and control machinery and processes in manufacturing plants, factories, and assembly lines. It continuously monitors the state of input devices such as sensors and switches and makes decisions based on a customised programme to control output devices like motors, valves, and lights. In India, PLCs play a major role in the country's growing industrial automation sector, powering everything from automobile plants in Pune and Chennai to food processing units, textile mills, and power stations. Engineering students across IITs, NITs, and polytechnics study PLC programming as part of electrical, electronics, and mechatronics curricula. The demand for PLC-skilled professionals has surged with initiatives like Make in India and the expansion of smart factories under Industry 4.0. PLCs are also widely used in water treatment plants, metro rail systems, and oil refineries across the country. For competitive exams like GATE, SSC JE, and PSU recruitment tests, questions on PLC architecture, ladder logic, and input-output modules frequently appear, making it an important topic for technical aspirants in India.
