What is HMI?
A Human-Machine Interface (HMI) is a user interface or dashboard that connects a person to a machine, system, or device. In industrial settings, HMIs are commonly used to visualize and control complex processes, such as those in manufacturing, power plants, and automation systems. In India, HMIs are integral to the growing Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) ecosystem, especially in sectors like automotive manufacturing (e.g., in Maruti Suzuki plants), textile mills, and energy management. They are also found in modern consumer devices, such as smart home panels and medical equipment. HMIs typically combine hardware (touchscreens, keypads) with software to display real-time data, alarms, and controls, replacing older button-and-light panels. For students pursuing engineering, especially electrical, electronics, or computer science, HMI concepts appear in subjects like industrial automation, control systems, and embedded systems. Understanding HMI design is also relevant for GATE and campus placement exams for companies in automation (like Siemens, ABB, Schneider Electric).
