Union Territory Quota
Full Form of UTQ
What is UTQ?
The Union Territory Quota, commonly abbreviated as UTQ, refers to a reservation policy in India that allocates a specific percentage of seats in educational institutions, government jobs, and other public services to candidates from Union Territories (UTs) of the country. This quota is designed to ensure that residents of Union Territories, which are directly administered by the Central Government rather than having their own state legislature, get fair representation in higher education and public sector employment opportunities. The quota applies to premier institutions under the central government, including central universities, IITs, IIMs, and various other centrally funded educational bodies and professional colleges. Several Union Territories including Delhi, Puducherry, Chandigarh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep, Ladakh, and Jammu and Kashmir benefit from this provision. The UTQ plays a crucial role in competitive exams such as JEE, NEET, and various UPSC examinations, where candidates claiming this quota must provide valid domicile certificates from their respective Union Territory. This reservation mechanism helps bridge the gap in opportunities for residents of smaller administrative regions who might otherwise face disadvantages in the broader competitive landscape across India.
