What is PH?
PH, derived from 'Potential of Hydrogen', represents a logarithmic scale used to specify the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution. In India, pH measurement is integral across diverse sectors such as agriculture, water quality monitoring, food processing, pharmaceuticals, and education. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, where a value of 7 is neutral, below 7 indicates acidity, and above 7 denotes alkalinity. In agricultural contexts, soil pH directly affects crop yield and nutrient availability; Indian farmers often test soil using portable pH meters or litmus papers to determine lime or fertilizer requirements. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mandates specific pH ranges for drinking water (6.5 to 8.5) to ensure public health. In schools and colleges, pH is a core topic in chemistry syllabi under CBSE, ICSE, and state boards, forming the basis for understanding acid-base reactions, buffer solutions, and ionic equilibrium. Experiments like titration often use pH indicators such as phenolphthalein and methyl orange. For competitive exams like NEET, JEE Main, and JEE Advanced, conceptual and numerical questions on pH, pOH, and pH calculations are frequently tested. The concept also extends to industrial applications, such as monitoring the pH of effluents to comply with environmental regulations set by the Central Pollution Control Board.
