Tax Deducted at Source
Full Form of TDS
What is TDS?
Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) is a mechanism of direct taxation introduced by the Income Tax Department of India to collect tax at the very point of income generation. Under this system, any person or entity making specified payments such as salary, rent, commission, professional fees, or interest is legally required to deduct a certain percentage of tax before making the payment to the recipient. The deducted amount is then deposited with the government on behalf of the recipient. This concept applies to a wide range of transactions and is governed by the Income Tax Act, 1961. In India, TDS serves dual purposes: it ensures a steady flow of revenue to the government throughout the year and also minimizes tax evasion by leaving an audit trail. Every deductor must obtain a Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN) and file quarterly TDS returns. The recipient can claim credit for the TDS against their total tax liability while filing their Income Tax Return (ITR). TDS rates vary based on the nature of payment and are subject to provisions of the Finance Act. For students and aspirants of competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and banking, understanding TDS is crucial for finance and public administration topics. It reflects the broader objective of widening the tax base and promoting financial discipline.
